Somewhat hidden in Funchal is the Santa Clara Monastery, which is definitely worth a visit.
You have to ring the bell at a locked door, but inside you will get a warm welcome and at certain times you can join a guided tour for just 2 EUR. A very enthusiastic and friendly lady provides information with amazing knowledge and language skills. The church is an absolute highlight.
Interesting is also the fact that besides the few nuns, who still living here, a kindergarten is also located in the convent.
