From the old town of Funchal (Zona Velha) you can take the cable car up to the municipality of Monte. During the 15-20 minute ride, you can enjoy a unique and beautiful view of the amphitheatre and the bay of Funchal. In addition, you will get an impression of the different living situations in the city, as you float above the roofs of the city and look out over the gardens and terraces.
Up in Monte you can visit this very popular part of the city and see for example the botanical garden, the Monte Palace Tropical Garden or the church of Monte. Also the ride with the famous toboggan starts in Monte.
This tour to Monte has always been a very popular excursion, as well for the local population as for the tourists, and until 1943 there was a rack railway up the mountain.
