Monte Palace Tropical Garden

What began in the 18th century as a private estate, become later a luxurious hotel: “Monte Palace Hotel”. It was bought in the 80s by the entrepreneur José Berardo. He thus realized his dream of a public botanical garden.
But it’s much more than just an impressive garden. You can also admire art collections, walk along the Portuguese history represented on beautiful azulejos (Portuguese art tiles), admire the Asian part of the garden with its red pagodas, Buddha’s and a lot of water elements and you can enjoy a great view of Funchal from several places.
The park is worth seeing and you should bring enough time with you, as it spreads over a quite large area. Comfortable shoes are important as the park is built on a hillside in Monte and you will have to walk some stairs and steep paths. But there are also many nice places and benches where you can make yourself comfortable. And if you don’t make it back at all, there are small golf carts waiting for you at the bottem.
At the entrance of the garden we can also recommend the Greenhouse Coffee Roaster Café with delicious coffee specialties and homemade cakes.
