There are many beautiful places in Madeira to admire an impressive sunrise.
The alarm clock has to be set early, as most of the time you have to drive a distance and maybe even hike a bit (depending on where you staying on the island and where you want to go).
We love this special experience with the unbelievable spectacle of colors.
We recommend the sunrise at Pico do Arieiro, Pico Ruivo or the Bica da Cana viewpoint. These are all viewpoints in the mountains, as we especially like this landscape.
Equipped with warm clothes (especially on the Picos it can be cold and windy), headlamps / torches, photo camera and a breakfast we set off in the dark.
When the sun is rising, it gets noticeably warmer and you can enjoy this natural spectacle.
At Pico Do Arieiro you can park in the car park and then choose a nice spot. Here you can admire the sunrise from different places.
At Bica da Cana you can park next to the road or in the nearby car park and then just walk up a small hill approximately 10-15 minutes to the viewpoint.
To get to Pico Ruivo you have to drive to Achada do Teixeira and then walk up the hill for about 5 km. This viewpoint has the longest way, but then one can enjoy the sunrise at 1.861m on the highest point of Madeira. If you don’t make it all the way up, on the way up you can have a great view as well.
